Independent filmmaking is a process for Zeng to theorize issues addressed in films, and Chinese activist documentary filmmaking and distribution. Zeng is the producer and co-director of documentary film自由城的囚徒 [Prisoners in Freedom City] (Hu Jia and Zeng Jinyan, 2007); a main collaborator (researcher and interviewer) of documentary film Sud Eau Nord Deplacer [South to North] [南水北调] (Antoine Boutet, 2014); the scriptwriter and cinematographer of  animation short A Poem to Liu Xia [致刘霞] (Trish McAdam, 2015); and the producer, executive producer, production designer/co-director of two feature documentary films entitled We The Workers [Nous les ouvriers] [凶年之畔] (Wen Hai, 2017) and Outcry and Whisper (forthcoming 2020). At Chinese Independent Documentary Lab (CIDL, Hong Kong), Zeng is the leading curator of independent film festival sections: 叛逆中国 [Rebel Memories] (2014), 飞越疯人院 [Flew Over Mental Asylum] (2015), and 情欲中国 [Desiring China: Sexuality and Female Subjectivity] (2016).
